ALCATRAZ

SF Map: L, 0

A Federal Penitentiary until 1963, Alcatraz, known also as "The Rock," was home to "Machine Gun" Kelly, Al Capone and Robert "Birdman" Stroud. The island, about a mile from the San Francisco shore, is accessible only by Blue & Gold Fleet.

Self-guided, audio-cassette walking tours of the former Federal penitentiary may be taken daily. Advance reservations are highly recommended during peak season. Dress warmly and wear comfortable walking shoes; there are several inclines on the island.

Note: Tickets for reservations up to 24 hours in advance may be charged by phone.
